Vault Hunters: Ep. 1
My spreadsheet of wrestling information is looking too sparse. I need more matches from random indies in the 2000s. Good thing that the WWE Vault YouTube channel is posting random bangers then, eh? Today (today being September 9th, 2024), they released an old Adam Pearce match from UPW. Against Diamond Dallas Page too! Thought I'd give it a check and see what it was about. I've never actually watched an Adam Pearce match, which is highkey a crime considering his pedigree in ROH and NWA. His backstory is very interesting, actually. I might make a blog post about his series against Colt Cabana in NWA.
youtube
Adam Pearce is working heel here - that checks out, considering his opponent is a wrestling icon such as DDP. Pearce sells to us that he's the bad guy here by using his mic. The crowd wants a match - Pearce doesn't give us the fight we look for. He's toying with the crowd almost. The tech in the match is simple but effective, and it makes us want to root for DDP as well. Showing how, as the veteran, he's always just one step ahead of the upstart Pearce. Going for the Diamond Cutter early doesn't totally work for him, and we head back to more character-based moments, and a comedy spot with the crowd cheering for DDP and even the Ref over Pearce. We then get a classic switch into Pearce's upper hand - Manager interference and a low blow. This match feel super reliant on Pearce having interference on his side. I don't really recall any actual moves that Pearce hits except for a Snake Eyes on the turnbuckle and a lariat later in the match. His heat is classic WWE-style heat. Slow, drags the pace down, and mostly circles around a sleeper hold with tape. The finisher comes quite quickly after this. After the heat dissolves, Pearce accidentally knocks his manager off the ropes and then takes a Diamond Cutter for a finish. The match didn't particularly take a step up after the heat, and I totally expected the match to keep on going after that Diamond Cutter. Overall, I think that this match was a relatively by the numbers affair, but they did do the basics pretty well. 6/10.

WrestleQuest is your way to glory beyond the ring
Tumblr media
WrestleQuest pro wrestling and RPG game launches on both Linux and Windows PC. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of Mega Cat Studios. Available on both Steam and Humble Store with Positive reviews. Mega Cat Studios and Skybound Entertainment have teamed up to release a game that is a unique blend of pro wrestling and RPG, WrestleQuest, on Linux. At its core, WrestleQuest offers a chance to step into the shoes of an up and coming wrestler. Just as every sports person dreams of reaching the height of their sport, players embark on a journey alongside the legends of wrestling. But it's not just about sheer power or flashy moves. Since it's a test of dedication, perseverance, and the unyielding spirit to stand tall. Even when faced with adversity. WrestleQuest draws inspiration from towering figures of the wrestling world, such as “Macho Man” Randy Savage. These figures aren't just references; the settings and tests you face are designed to reflect the illustrious careers of these wrestling giants. Think of it as diving into the most exciting chapters of a history book. But instead of just reading, you're living out those moments. The combat mechanics of WrestleQuest fuse familiar role-playing elements with the dynamism of wrestling. It's not just about choosing an attack but learning the rhythm and style that will give you an edge in the ring. You can personalize your wrestler, not just in terms of looks, but right down to the way they taunt opponents. The same with the way they make a grand entrance.
WrestleQuest - Launch Trailer
youtube
Beyond the ring, the world brims with imagination. While the term 'monsters' might remind you of a fantasy RPG, here they are enemies with flamboyant costumes and larger than life personas. Allies, too, come in the form of other wrestling personalities. Some based on real-life legends like André the Giant and Jake the Snake Roberts. WrestleQuest is a vibrant blend of the real and surreal. While offering a fresh look on the wrestling domain. To top it off, WrestleQuest is a salute to the wrestling greats. As you navigate through challenges and milestones, you'll find nods to iconic figures such as Booker T, Diamond Dallas Page, and Jeff Jarrett, to name a few. It's not just about the thrill of the fight; it's also a journey through the hall of fame. While paying respect to those who have laid the groundwork for the sport.
Player Feedback:
Many players were excited about the blend of wrestling and RPG elements in WrestleQuest. However, they found the frequent Quick Time Events (QTEs) in battles to be tedious. Although the music and art were praised, some areas lacked music and the character movement was deemed slow. The inclusion of real-life podcasters was debatable. Players also reported bugs, and some feel that WrestleQuest would benefit from early access feedback. However, wrestling fans like the nostalgia, character cameos, and the game's overall concept. Overall, it's a mix with good aesthetics but some gameplay frustrations. WrestleQuest pro wrestling and RPG is more than just a pastime. It's a bridge connecting the fantasy of role-playing with the adrenaline of wrestling. All while paying tribute to the legends that have shaped the wrestling universe. So, if you're keen to step beyond the ropes and test your mettle, this might just be your next big challenge. Launching on Steam and Humble Store. Priced at $29.99 USD / £21.99 / 29,99€. Along with support for Linux and Windows PC.

How WWE legend Jake 'The Snake' Roberts left lasting mark on Diamond Dallas Page's wrestling career
Jake “The Snake” Roberts was one of pro wrestling’s first antiheroes and left an indelible mark on the industry with his use of the DDT finishing maneuver and his use of a python in the ring to create a sense of fear upon opponents and the audience watching him. Roberts’ in-ring prowess became the driving influence for Diamond Dallas Page to step in between the ropes and make a name for himself…

I would've loved to have asked Scott Hall if he remembers certain pop culture from the 1960's, and if I did ask him, I wonder if he'd tell some of his wrestling friends like Kevin Nash, Hulk Hogan, Diamond Dallas Page, Jake "The Snake" Roberts and even some other wrestlers who didn't grow up in the 60's (like Shawn Michaels and X Pac) about me and my 1960's knowledge and questions.

What I Learned About Pro Wrestling
Any experience can be a good teacher, even ones that are totally fake.
Tumblr media
When I was a kid, I was into pro wrestling. But this blog posting isn’t really about that.
Instead, it’s about a temporary assignment I completed last week. When I got to this assignment I had no idea how much I would be making, so I was disappointed when talking to others on the job revealed that it was much lower than what I’m used to. Worse, trying to talk to other also reminded me that as…

Note
Does Jake the snake Roberts wear a snake costume or is it more of a metaphorical thing?
The snake was not metaphorical
Tumblr media
Jake the Snake is one of the avatars of Pro Wrestling as it was: a man from a colossally fucked up background who became a wrestler basically to prove to his monster of a father that he could do it better, who made a career despite never being the biggest or the strongest by dint of sheer oily charisma - who took on his gimmick despite hating snakes and thus spent most of his life forgetting them in car trunks or explaining to the cops why his prop bit the referee - a pillhead, an alcoholic, a born-again, tangentially responsible for the creation of the most successful catchphrase in wrestling (”You [Jake] talk about your Psalms, talk about John 3:16 - Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass”) - a man who ought to be dead ten times over and is now a mascot for the lifesaving effects of Diamond Dallas Page’s yoga business - the kind of wrestler who John Darnielle wrote his songs about, and the kind of wrestler that for the most part no longer exists in the business, which is, despite the romantic attraction of men destroying themselves for money, largely a good thing
I do not know why Davey Boy Smith Jr (son of the British Bulldog, about whom I could write another paragraph) threw hot coffee in his face at Wrestlecon this year, but I guarantee you Jake made enough enemies in his life that someone at least felt it was justified

66. How To Develop Work Ethic | Diamond Dallas Page
Diamond Dallas Page is an American retired professional wrestler, fitness instructor, motivational speaker, and actor. Page first broke into the wrestling business in 1988, as a manager in the American Wrestling Association, where he worked for nine months before signing with WCW in 1991. There, he continued as a manager until late 1991, when he became a wrestler.
Page developed a yoga fitness program initially called Yoga for Regular Guys Workout (YRG), after discovering the health benefits of yoga through his then-wife Kimberly while he recovered from ruptures to his L4/L5 discs in 1998. Page developed the book into a series of workout videos titled DDP Yoga (formerly YRG). DDP Yoga was featured in a video about Arthur Boorman in May 2012. The story was picked up by the mainstream media, including Good Morning America. The video describes the journey of Arthur Boorman, a disabled veteran who was told by doctors he would never walk again. After spending fifteen years on crutches, Boorman followed Page's yoga plan for ten months and documented his progress on home video. He lost 140 pounds and regained the strength and flexibility to walk and run without his crutches, back braces or leg braces.
On February 21, 2014, Page appeared on the ABC series Shark Tank, where he was seeking $200,200 for a 5% share in the DDP Yoga company. He declined to sell a 50% share for that same amount to Kevin O'Leary. Page had hoped to use the money to develop a mobile app. The other investors were impressed by Boorman's improvement but believed the home exercise market was too competitive and predicted net profits ($800,000 in the previous year) would fall. Page later said he sold more than $1 million worth of products in the first six days after his appearance.

I wished I could've met Razor Ramon/Scott Hall so I could ask him about if he remembers these things from the 1960's, since he grew up in that decade, yet I don't really want to ask other pro wrestlers who grew up in the 60's (Bret Hart, Lex Luger, Kevin Nash, Diamond Dallas Page, Hulk Hogan, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, etc.) if they remember certain things from that decade.
